Where to Start if you are New to Running

I started running many years ago, and I am incredibly grateful for what the sport has brought to my life. As a coach, I now see people coming to running for potentially their first time as an adult. New sports or activities can be daunting, anxiety provoking and overwhelming. In order to best help you overcome this, I have 5 tips below to help you on the commencement of your running journey, allowing you to have longevity and happiness in the sport.

  1. Set Realistic Goal(s): These can be both on a micro and macro level. For example your macro goal might be running 5km non-stop in the next 8-12 weeks. On a micro level it might be sessions that have a run walk strategy (e.g. 1 min run, 1 min walk, repeat x10)

  2. Invest in a pair of running shoes: We are all incredibly unique in our preferences and choices here. I recommend going to a local running store where they stock a variety of brand that you can try on. No need to purchase carbon plated shoes. These are not for every day running, and not necessary if you are just starting out.

  3. Run for Time not Distance: This is a great way to tick off a training session when you are a beginner. Whether it’s a 20 mins jog or a run/walk strategy, it will take off the pressure of having to hit X number of Kilometres.

  4. Find a community or friend to run with: This is excellent from both a motivation and accountability perspective. You are more likely to keep showing up if you know someone is there to run with you. Especially if they are a similar level to you. Running clubs/communities are great for this as they often have a whole range of abilities.

  5. Celebrate the small wins: It is easy to fall down a hole of comparison syndrome in running. Like most things in life, there is always someone doing more, running faster etc. Try to avoid this trap. Instead focus on your own progress, goals, and wins. In doing so you will sustain your love for the sport.

Give the above go, and see just how much you will progress month on month.
